Tae Kwon Do Han Moo Kwan

The The Han Moo Kwan was founded in August of 1954 and is one of the eight (8) original kwans of Korea. The founder of the Central Gymnasium of Tae Kwon Do Han Moo Kwan, which translates to Korea Military (or Martial) School, is the Great Grandmaster Lee, Kyo Yoon. He is still seated in the President's chair as its first generation President. The Great Grandmaster Lee also sits on several committees and holds several high official positions at the Kukkiwon (World Headquarters for Taekwondo) and the Korea Taekwondo Association, both in Seoul.

In addition to the Great Grandmaster Lee founding the Han Moo Kwan, he is highly accredited and decorated with the following:

July 1953: Founded the Taekwondo Division at Hankook Gymnasium.

July 1953: First Instructor for Taekwondo Division of CIC, the Eighth United States Army.

July 1953: First Instructor for Taekwondo Division of Korea University.

Aug. 1954: Founded Central Gymnasium of Taekwondo Hanmookwan.

June 1955: First Instructor for Taekwondo Division of Yonsei University.

Oct. 1960: First Instructor for Taekwondo Division of Seoul Metropolitan Police.

Mar. 1961: Member of Board of Directors, Korea Taekwondo Association.

June 1965: Authored Taekwondo Textbook for Million Taekwondoists.

July 1970: Authored Taekwondo Textbook - Easy to Understand.

The Great Grandmaster Lee, Kyo Yoon is one of few Kwan founders still seated in the founding President's chair. He has accomplished so much throughout his martial arts career. His contributions toward Taekwondo and its development is unprecedented. The Great Grandmaster Lee holds the 10th DAN, the highest rank attainable in Taekwondo throughout the world.

The Han Moo Kwan's logo or symbol centered on its flag or banner is the colorful Korean Dragon.

The Han Moo Kwan follows, very closely, the requirements of the World Taekwondo Headquarters or the Kukkiwon of South Korea for the DAN Level (Degrees of Black Belt) training and promotions. The following form sets are required for the Han Moo Kwan and U.S. Central Taekwondo Association ranking.

The preceeding form sets are required for the Han Moo Kwan and U.S. Central Taekwondo Association ranks of 4th DAN (4th Degree Black Belt). Grandmaster In Hui Won oversees all recommendations for promotion under the U.S. Han Moo Kwan Federation and the U.S. Central Taekwondo Association.

Grandmaster Won is directly under the Great Grandmaster Lee, Kyo Yoon and holds a 9th DAN from the Han Moo Kwan. He also holds an 8th DAN from the Kukkiwon as well as holding a rare (1st Class) International Referee Certification from the World Taekwondo Federation in Seoul, Korea.

Master Dr. Ko is directly under Grandmaster Won and holds the 6th DAN (Yuk-DAN) Black Belt from the U.S. Central Taekwondo Association. He also holds the 6th DAN (Yuk-DAN) from the Han Moo Kwan as signed and sealed by the Great Grandmaster Lee, Kyo Yoon of Seoul, Korea.

Master Dr. Ko's son, Master J. Michael Coconis is also a Han Moo Kwan Dan Holder. He was examined the same day as his father. Master Coconis holds the 5th DAN (Oh-DAN) from the Han Moo Kwan as signed and sealed by the Great Grandmaster Lee, Kyo Yoon of Seoul, Korea. He also holds the 5th DAN (Oh-DAN) from the U.S. Central Taekwondo Association as signed and sealed by Grandmaster Won, In Hui. "Han Moo Kwan Family Tree"

Master Dr. Ko has successfully passed a long series of examinations (12 of them) entitling him the classification as United States Class A Referee. His International Referee classification is pending. He is certified as Supreme Referee, which is the highest level, under Grandmaster Won, In Hui. Grandmaster Won is one of the few in the U.S. who holds the 1st Class WTF International Referee Classification. He is also one of the few in the U.S. and Korea, who attained this at the 2nd World Taekwondo Championships in Seoul, Korea in 1975.

Grandmaster Won has appointed Master Dr. Ko as Vice-President of the U.S. Central Taekwondo Association based in Oklahoma City and is in charge of all U.S. Central Taekwondo Association affairs in the State of Kansas. He also represents the Tae Kwon Do Han Moo Kwan and its affairs in the State of Kansas. With honor, Master Dr. Ko has accepted this position with full commitment.

In November 1998, Master Dr. Ko received a Citation from USTU (United States Taekwondo Union) President, Sang Chul Lee, as Kansas State Instructor of the Year Award. Additional recognition, was given him on the front page of the Wichita State University Sunflower newspaper shortly thereafter.

Memberships are available in the U.S. Central Taekwondo Association as well as Rank Promotions through its organizational representative, Master Dr. Gar Won Ko. Also, for Black Belt candidates, Han Moo Kwan testing for DAN certifications are available through application and examination.

On August 8, 1999, the Great Grandmaster Lee, Kyo Yoon was escorted to the State of Kansas (Wichita) by Grandmaster Won. This was his first visit to the Ko Mu Do Kwan, the Kansas Headquarters for the Han Moo Kwan. A large reception and gathering of U.S. Central Taekwondo Association instructors, students, and affiliates were on hand to offer their warm greetings, respect, and gratitude to the Han Moo Kwan Founder. Master Dr. Ko performed the most humble traditional Korean bow (to the floor twice on hands and knees) upon their entry into the Kwan front doors. A Referee Seminar was also conducted that same day from 2 to 6 p.m. Just prior to the opening of the seminar, Master Dr. Ko was bestowed one of the highest honors from the World Taekwondo Federation, signed by its president, Dr. Un Yong Kim. This most prestigous award, The World Taekwondo Federation "Citation" was presented to him by the Great Grandmaster Lee who hand carried the document from Korea.
