Annual Moo Duk Kwan Commemoration and Veneration of the Great Grandmaster Hwang Kee: (1914 - 2002)

On November 9, 2002 the Moo Duk Kwan practitioners and members of the Ko Mu Do Kwan celebrated and commemorated the birth (November 9, 1914) of its Founder, the Great Grandmaster Hwang Kee, and the Founding Date (November 9, 1945) of his Moo Duk Kwan.

A Shrine was constructed for Kwan Jang Nim to venerate him on his birthday.

Meditations, Ten Creeds of the Moo Duk Kwan, background readings, Moo Duk Kwan history, Tang Soo Do history, Soo Bahk Do history, Tae Kwon Do "true" history, the 20-year political destruction (1960 - 1980) of Korea and their Traditional Martial Arts, demonstrations and testimonials were propagated to those attending and seated in front of Kwan Jang Nim's Shrine. All in all, a very special event, on a very special day, for a very special man, and his very special martial art.

Tournament Results:

The following members of the Ko Mu Do Kwan competed at the 27th Annual USA Southern Tae Kwon Do Open Championships in Nashville, Tennessee on September 28, 2002. This most prestigous and long-time annual event is sponsored by Grandmaster Seoung Eui Shin (9th DAN Moo Duk Hae and 9th DAN Kukkiwon) and Shin's Martial Arts Institute. Grandmaster Shin is President of the Pan-American Moo Duk Kwan Society as well as President of the United States Tae Kwon-Do Moo Duk Kwan Federation.

Master Dr. Ko, Mr. Tony Grimm, and Mrs. Rita Ko, performed a most spectacular demonstration for Grandmaster Shin and many spectators attending this event.

Anthony P. (Tony) Grimm, Cho DAN Black Belt, won 3rd Place trophy in fighting (lightweight division). Mr. Grimm also competed in forms competition performing the Naihanchi Hyung Sam Dan.

Chris Coon, Green Belt, won 1st Place trophy in fighting and 2nd Place trophy in forms (Palgwe Hyung).

Adam Dreyfus, Yellow Belt, won 1st Place trophy in forms (Palgwe Hyung).

David Burke, Yellow Belt, won 2nd Place trophy in forms (Pyong-An Hyung Cho Dan) and 2nd Place trophy in Fighting.

Courtney Maikowski, Yellow Belt, won 3rd Place trophy in fighting.

Ken Bell, White Belt, won 3rd Place trophy in forms (Ki Cho Hyung SAM-Boo) and 1st Place trophy in Fighting.

Geoffery Bell, White Belt, won 2nd Place trophy in fighting. Geoff also competed in forms competition performing the Ki Cho Hyung SAM-Boo).

Master Dr. Ko is very proud of all of his students and their performance, will, and determination at this event. They all travelled 1600 miles (round trip) to support Grandmaster Shin.

Master Dr. Ko was conferred the special and rare "Letter Of Commendation For The Meritorius Services" from The Korea Tae Kwon Do Moo Duk Kwan Association. This commendation letter was signed and sealed by its second generation president, Grandmaster Jae Kyu Chon of Seoul, Korea.
Dr. Ko's Moo Duk Kwan master, Grandmaster Seoung Eui Shin presented him this most prestigous and rare award on September 28, 2002 in Nashville, Tennessee.

The following members of the Ko Mu Do Kwan competed at the 11th Annual U.S. Central Taekwondo Championships held at the Del City High School Field House in Del City (Oklahoma City), Oklahoma on August 3, 2002. This event was presented by Grandmaster In Hui Won and sponsored by the U.S. Tae Kwon Do Han Moo Kwan Association and the U.S. Central Taekwondo Association. Among the distinguished guests were Grandmaster D.W. Kang from Tulsa and Grandmaster Lim from Abilene, Texas.

Grandmaster Kang, Dong Won, who has been teaching and leading Tae Kwon Do in Oklahoma and Tulsa for over 30 years, gave a very moving speech and presentation at this most prestigous event. His words had deep meaning and inspired all of us who heard them. We send our most humble gratitude and thanks to Grandmaster Kang for sharing his words of wisdom and thoughts with us.

One of the main competition special events was the Team Demonstration Competition. From the Ko Mu Do Kwan and representing the State of Kansas, Master Dr. Gar Won Ko lead his 3-man team to winning a 1st Place (6-foot) Trophy. Master Ko performed a series of Hapkido Techniques consisting of Kyuk Pa Sool, Dan Jong (Cane) Ho Shin Sool, Gum Do and Dan Bong (Knife and Club) Ho Shin Sool, and Hapkido Ho Shin Sool Demonstration Routine. Assisting Master Ko was his Cho Dan Black Belt, Clark D. Shultz and a Kuk Sool Won Dan Bo (Black Belt Candidate), Donald Clay Delmez. This demonstration was truly a Traditional display of Hapkido to the Grandmasters, Masters, Instructors, Judges, competitors, and spectators. Master Dr. Ko gives his gratitude and credit to his Hapkido Master, Grandmaster Ik Hwan Kim and his Universal Hapkido Institute of New Jersey. In the other divisions at this tournament championship in OKC, the following was yielded:

Clark D. Shultz, Black Belt, won 1st Place trophy in weapons forms (Sai), 1st Place trophy in weapons self-defense (Jook Do against Dan Bong), and 3rd Place trophy in forms (Bassai Dae Hyung).

Frank J. Maikowski, Black Belt, won 3rd Place trophy in fighting (heavyweight division).

Rita B. Ko, Black Belt, won 2nd Place trophy in the Breaking division (Wood and Concrete).

D. Clay Delmez, Dan Bo, won 2nd Place trophy in weapons forms (Dan Bong Hyung).

Chris Coon, Green Belt, won 1st Place trophy in fighting and 2nd Place trophy in forms (Taeguek).

Chelsea Coffey, Green Belt, won 2nd Place trophy in fighting and 1st Place trophy in forms (Palgwe).

Taggert Coffey, Green Belt, won 1st Place trophy in fighting and 3rd Place trophy in forms (Palgwe).

Adam Dreyfus, Yellow Belt, won 2nd Place trophy in fighting and 1st Place trophy in forms (Taeguek), and 2nd Place trophy in Breaking.

David Burke, Yellow Belt, won 3rd Place trophy in forms (Ki Cho Hyung SAM-Boo) and 1st Place trophy in Breaking.

Ken Bell, White Belt, won 3rd Place trophy in forms (Ki Cho Hyung IL-Boo) and 1st Place trophy in Breaking.

Geoffery Bell, White Belt, won 2nd Place trophy in fighting, 3rd Place trophy in forms (Ki Cho Hyung IL-Boo), and 2nd Place trophy in Breaking.

In summary, all of the 12 members of the Ko Mu Do Kwan who participated and competed at this tournament championship event in OKC, yielded a total of 23 Trophies. The following picture depicts this fact. Master Dr. Ko is very proud of his students in their performance.

As an added significant note, the 12 students of the Ko Mu Do Kwan made it possible for their Kwan to also be awarded a 7-foot beautiful trophy for team presence, participation and performance.

The following members of the Ko Mu Do Kwan competed at the 1st Annual National U.S. Taekwondo Won Championships held at the Switzer High School Field House on April 20, 2002 in Overland Park, Kansas:

Master Dr. Gar Won Ko, competed in the Master's Competition which was held for the first time at a National Event such as this. Master Ko took first place (all Gold Medals) in three (3) separate divisions: Breaking (Kyukpa), Weapons (Moo Gi Sool), and Forms (Poomse or Hyung). In the Breaking Division, Master Ko explosively broke concrete patio blocks with various Soo Do techniques and his crown point on his head. In the Weapons Division, Master Ko performed a Ko Mu Do Chong Bong Hyung (an old Korean staff form set). In the Forms Division, Master Ko performed the Sipjin form set from the Kukkiwon.

This first time Master's Competition was judged by a distinguished panel of 7 top Korean Grandmasters in the U.S. some of which came to the U.S. in late 60's to teach and bring the Korean Martial Arts to this country.

Master Dr. Ko is truly honored to have been judged by these USTW Officers/Grandmasters and awarded three 1st Place Gold Medals with USTW Certification Documents entitling him 'CHAMPION' of the 2002 USTW National Event.
